Mud and bras makes for smart public art

Walking around the gardens at the Three Trees Community Centre, I was stopped in my tracks by a neat row of planted bra-skets, assembled by the lovely ladies working and volunteering at Gro-Organic for breast cancer awareness month. A perfect example of public art I thought - demands my attention, aesthetically pleasing (to me anyway), with a relevant and thought provoking message. What makes it smart? It achieved all these things without costing the earth or being overly complicated, it fully involved the community and it doesn't (arguably) pose any significant risks to public safety, requiring mitigation.  Genius. It also reminded me that public art doesn't need to be (indeed sometimes shouldn't be) a permanent fixture. Maybe I'll see a row of exquisitely planted Y-fronts in the future.
