What is the Brixton Low Carbon Zone about?

The Low Carbon Zones initiative was set up by the Mayor of London with the aim of reducing carbon by 20.12% by the London 2012 Olympics. In September 2009, Lambeth became one of ten local authorities to receive approval for their bid to establish a low carbon zone, and was awarded £295,000 to spend over the two year lifetime of the project.

Aims

To help every resident and business in the zone cut their carbon emissions, reduce waste and save energy (and money). The Brixton Low Carbon Zone aims to enthuse and support residents to:

• Reduce carbon footprints
• Reduce fuel bills
• Make homes warmer, more energy efficient and gain access to grants and funding to do this
• Get involved in the local community
• Develop sustainable living projects and access funding for them
• Learn and develop new skills

How to get started

Residents of the Low Carbon Zone can access the following help and services now to get started in leading a greener life:

• Energy audits for all residents upon request by our team of Green Doctors
• Sustainability Clinic where you can drop in with questions on energy, food and transport
• Assistance setting up sustainable projects, community groups orany other idea that you have!
• Draught proofing to reduce energy waste and heating bills
• Sustainable transport projects including cycle training, DR bike and estate cycle parking provision
• Dedicated waste prevention officer to promote recycling and other waste reduction projects in the low carbon zone.

Hi Kees

What's the latest on investment in Brixton's renewables ?

I see great news from Ovesco in Lewes

" The High Court has just ruled that the Government FiT cuts are “legally flawed” & OVESCO was used by Friends of the Earth as a case study effected by the FiT cut.

  • What does this mean for OVESCO and our investors?

This gives us a small window of opportunity during January 2012 to raise capital to install another 80kW of PV at Priory School in Lewes and on the roof of Plumpton Village Hall.

Thanks that is good to hear Denis is MCS. It is one of those things that costs a lot to be accredited but it seems is necessary to comply with FITs requirements. Looking at a feasibility on a community project hear in north Lambeth, so thanks for reminder of our local talent.
