Global High School Prize 2012 Call for submission

Just wanted to ensure secondary schools are aware of the call for submissions for the Zayed Future Energy Prize. What I find interesting is that the process is to submit a business case for how they plan to utilise the prize for the purpose of raising awareness of sustainability and reducing the school’s environmental footprint. Consideration for economics is more and more becoming the measure - and is a good challenge to us all to help move the issue on from often purely being considered through the environmental need.
Over the past 4 years, through the Zayed Future Energy Prize, the United Arab Emirates has been honoring those who are committed to advancing renewable energy and sustainable technologies globally. One of the greatest unifying challenges in the world today is addressing climate change, promoting sustainable development and encouraging innovation in renewable energy technologies.

In 2012, the Zayed Future Energy Prize announced the creation of the Global High School Prize. It aims to encourage future generations to think outside the box, develop their sense of innovation and in the process – understand the practicalities of living a sustainable life.

The Global High School Prize awards USD 100 000 to each of the five high schools selected from different regions (Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania).

High schools from around the world are invited to submit a business case for how they plan to utilise the prize for the purpose of raising awareness of sustainability and reducing the school’s environmental footprint. High schools are asked to submit projects based on one or more of the three objectives of the UN Sustainable Energy for All Initiative: Energy Access, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

The deadline for submissions is 16 July 2012.

If you have any questions, please consult the web site at www.zayedfutureenergyprize.com, or contact Dalal Yassin at dyassin@masdar.ae (+971-2-653-6012).

Hi all,
ZSL will be attending the Rio+20 Earth Summit (otherwise known as the UN Conference on Sustainable Development) in June this year, and is trying to gain commitment from world leaders to make the changes necessary for a healthy planet in the future.
We want as many people as possible to sign our Pledge for a Better Planet petition, which we will take to Rio+20.  If you could take ten seconds to sign your name to the pledge here:www.zsl.org/betterplanet, and encourage friends/colleagues/secondary schools/youth groups/newsletter subscribers to do the same, it would be a great message to send to world leaders!
Sign for a better world! Thank you!

It's official: 10:10’s Solar Schools project is going national!

Last year, the carbon cutting organisation 10:10 dreamed up a way for schools to install solar panels by raising money from their communities. Seven months on, they've shown it's possible with five solar rigs installed, over £75,000 raised, communities brought together and other carbon-cutting efforts boosted in the process.

Now it's time to go bigger. 10:10 is rolling the project out nationwide! But there’s only space for 100 schools, so visit www.solarschools.org.uk/apply to find our more and put your school forward!

Nature deficit disorder 'damaging Britain's children'

The National Trust is launching a consultation on tackling "nature deficit disorder".  The Natural Childhood report notes that UK children are losing contact with nature at a "dramatic" rate, and their health and education are suffering.  The two-month consultation is aimed at gathering views and examples of good and bad practice from the public and specialists.

Although the Empty Classroom day on 6 July doesn’t fall within the consultation period, the report could help to attract more interest for the event.
