Comment by The London Orchard Project on April 24, 2012 at 15:57 Hi folks. We're currently looking for our new partner community groups for the 2012/13 planting season (Nov-Feb). Are you part of a TRA, Transition initiative, park user group, school etc that has some land suitable for fruit trees, but don't know where to start? Or do you have a neglected, mature orchard nearby that could use some restorative pruning to extend the life of the trees and increase productivity? Then get in touch with us.
As part of our 'Creating New Orchards' programme we'll come and do a site visit to assess the space, develop a proposal including varieties and then help you to organise a community planting day where we'll plant and guard the trees together. 4-5 Members of your group will attend our 'Orchard Leader Training' in November where they'll learn how to care for the trees in the coming years. We'll then return six months later for a follow up visit to see how the trees are doing and answer any pest/disease questions. We'll also offer further training opportunities and ongoing support, and don't hesitate to ask to use our juice press and 'fruit-cycles' for any community events you'd like to run around your orchard!
We are also looking for groups to partner with for our 'Rediscovering London's Lost Orchard Heritage' programme. We are working with community groups to restore neglected orchards back into health. This typically involves a series of 3-4 workshops covering site clearance, restorative pruning, over-grafting and reinstatement through the re-planting of lost trees. So, if you know of an old orchard near you and have a willing group of volunteers, let us know!

Comment by The London Orchard Project on December 20, 2011 at 17:01 This is tricky - apple ID experts usually identify a fruit based on size, colour, smell, taste, texture, shape of carpels and calyx. They need around 5-10 samples of an apple to get a positive ID, and generally can't ID from photos. We held our first apple ID workshop in November and will be doing more next harvesting season, so will publicise that for anyone who wants to learn more about identifying apples.
