This week found our ever eager volunteer Ian completing the hard task of sitting at a pub in Wimbledon talking worms, gardens and colourful fruit. Finding his way over to the Wimbledon Food Group via a clever directional tool in the shape of a stick of celery in a pint glass, Ian was introduced to the green group, complete with Master Gardener, Claire Benson.
The WFG are a busy bunch and have two community garden spaces, the newest at the Christ Church gardens, launching with a wonderful event on 10th April. Their first garden, dubbed ‘Fireplace Gardens’ due to its location behind a fireplace shop (and its abundance of discarded fireplaces) is still in the renovation stages. The group are in need of some more volunteers and a sledge hammer or two to help clear this space and get it flourishing. The next clearing session is this Sunday (20th March) so if you have that spring-clean feeling then why not lend a hand. For a glimpse of what this looks like check out the video below.
The group have formed a bond with local school, Ricards Lodge, with the help of a wonderful lady called Joyce. The children are absolutely enamoured with the project and are so enthusiastic to start that they can bearly wait for the season to begin.
The WFG have been fortunate enough to receive funding from Capital Growth in order to start up and maintain their garden projects. Womeries and a rainbow of vegetables are amongst ideas of the group’s growth in 2011.
If you live in the Wimbledon area and find you have too many apples come September then take them along to the WFG’s apple pressing event.
Or if you fancy becoming involved a bit sooner then how about their film night next Wednesday (23rd March). ‘Food, Inc’, the Academy Award nominated film about the truth behind our food will be shown at Mansel Road Centre, Trinity United Reform Church and will include post-film chat about food growing and environmental sustainability.
It’ll be a great opportunity for you to meet this passionate and committed bunch and learn more about their fantastic projects and exciting ideas for the months ahead. So if you fancy getting involved, click here.
