About

EcoACTIVE is an innovative environmental education charity with a reputation for using hands-on, practical and fun approaches to explore complex issues of sustainability. We create eye-opening experiences for children and adults alike, working with schools and the wider community to develop their understanding of the world around them and give people the skills they need to make things better.

We started our work as ecoACTIVE in 1999, with the goal of helping children, adults and youth groups to think creatively about the planet as well as their own behaviour and its impact on the world around them. We hope that, through our connections with the communities of Hackney and north-east London, we can help develop positive responses to issues such as waste management, fuel poverty, biodiversity and food production.

So if you want to save on energy bills, create a community garden, develop a waste art project, sort out your recycling or simply raise people’s awareness of sustainable development and what it might mean for them, get in touch and we’ll develop an outreach activity designed just for you.

And if you’re a Hackney school, take a look at our programme of free activities available to primaries and secondaries across the borough – funded by the London Borough of Hackney to help schools manage their energy and waste more effectively.

Who do we work with?

As well as our main work with schools – 52 primaries and 12 secondaries during 2010-11 – we plan and run projects with tenants’ associations, families of young children, youth clubs, over-50s groups, the London Borough of Hackney, housing associations, children’s centres and nurseries, as well as funders across a wide spectrum including The Big Lottery and commercial organisations.

What are our aims?

To promote sustainable development in Hackney and north-east London through education programmes which build participants’ knowledge, skills and confidence.

To tackle climate change and fuel poverty by helping schools, families and communities save energy and reduce their CO2 emissions – as well as their bills! – giving them the motivation and resources to continue that work once we have gone.

To encourage people of all ages to think about sustainability, to make lifestyle changes and to improve their communities through their own actions by bringing people together to create inspiring art, crafts and green spaces as well as recycling, composting and energy initiatives.

To develop a network of sustainable development ‘champions’ in the community by training and developing volunteers and session workers who take part in our work.

To build active citizenship across all of Hackney and north-east London’s diverse communities, helping people take responsibility for their family, their neighbourhood and the planet.
