Storytelling Volunteer Are you a creative and exciting storyteller, interested in outdoor learning and looking for experience working with preschool age children? If you enjoy sharing stories with children or aspire to work in the fields of early years education and play, becoming a regular storyteller at our Story Stompers preschooler group could be the ideal volunteering opportunity for you. What does it involve? - Our charity are looking for a storytelling volunteer to help deliver our established weekly outdoor preschooler group, Story Stompers. - Story Stompers is held 9.15am – 10.15am on Tuesdays (excluding school holidays). Our storyteller would need to arrive at 9am to set up, and help to tidy up at the end of the session. - As a storyteller, you will be selecting and delivering a weekly interactive story for up to fifteen children, aged 2-4yrs. - You might use props, puppets, actions and signage to engage your audience, and make your story accessible for all - Stories might be seasonal, related to the nature and wildlife in our garden or include a message, theme or character you’d like to share. - Using your story as inspiration for the session, the rest of the team will plan a themed garden exploration or hunt and a follow up craft. - This role will therefore involve some planning, and communication with the Education Officer via email to share stories and ideas. Benefits for volunteers If you volunteer, you will: - Gain experience of working with preschool aged children and their parents in the inspirational outdoor setting of Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses. - Have the opportunity to share and develop your storytelling skills with an established and popular outdoor preschool group. - Develop your skills and understanding of planning, resourcing and delivering an educational programme of story themed sessions with the full support of a PGCE qualified Education Officer. - Meet new people and broaden your audience. - Develop reflective working practices. - Build confidence and people skills. - Work as part of a small, supportive and highly motivated team. - Be part of a very special community and charity. - Get a DBS check. - Get a reference. It’s also a lot of fun! Feeling inspired? We would love to hear from you. We would like you to have some experience of storytelling with children. As we run a regular group, we are looking for someone who can commit to at least 3 months of weekly sessions (excluding school holiday dates).

You will need to bring props to support with your storytelling; although we will pay for any resources used by attendees. As we will be working outdoors, comfortable and practical clothing is required.

About the project

Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses (BPCG) is an independent environmental charity operating from a former municipal greenhouse site in the centre of Lambeth’s Brockwell Park. Our 3742m2 site comprises a series of demonstration gardens and facilities including two commercial-sized greenhouses. We use the space to host a variety of educational initiatives loosely based around wildlife, food growing and environmental education. Our activities include open access community volunteering, school visits, family events, courses and workshops, and a range of specific projects targeted at vulnerable sectors of the local community such as our weekly gardening sessions for SEN schools and community groups.

We are open to the public and for drop-in garden volunteering four days a week, Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm (GMT) and to 5pm (BST). On Monday to Wednesday the site is available for education sessions for children run on the site as closed and bookable sessions.
